The Littlest Cowboy

I just had to show you the latest pic of my first and only grandson, Caden. A Texas Blog just has to have cowboys and he is the cutest one--Caden is 5--this day was after our County Fair Parade. He rode his new horse all by himself this year. Previous years he was led by his Mom and Dad. Sorry this post is not about quilting---uuuhhhh I made him a quilt----he likes quilts-------that's the best I can do. Next post is going to be about embroidery---I am practising with different stablizers and making a notebook so that I can remember my failures and why they failed. I should check out some of your blogs--I am sure I could learn something. If you have posted about embroidery, please leave me a comment and I will know where to go-----orrrrr----you can tell me where to go--or not--.

LULU AND TOM BRADY

For those of you who do not know, LULU, is our English Bulldog. LULU is a typical female--beautiful, passive, loving, caring, patient, and FAT! I tell you this in preparation for a story that begins with an orphan calf. He was born a few months ago. Being a large newborn, his mother, who was a heifer (calf was her first) worked all night trying to have him and she was successful, but all her insides came out (very sad story). When we found the sad site the next morning, the calf was in the middle of the field crying. We brought him home and began feeding him a bottle. I've done this many, many times before and it is very time consuming. When a friend offered us his "nurse" cow--I was very excited! Good nurse cows are hard to come by. They are usually Holstein cows. We worked for days trying to get them to bond and they finally did. TOM has done so well with his new mother (MY grandson Caden named him after Tom Brady, the football player). He is fat and slick and growing so fast. He has continued to stay gentle and "calls" us over to visit with him regularly. He enjoys being scratched and patted and talked to. He is now eating feed with "the big cows".
Now, the story I began to tell you about LULU. LULU loves all the cows. We have a fenced in yard and she will sit very silently and still with her nose sticking through the fence hoping that one of the cows will come over and let her "KISS" them.
Tom was really leary for a long time, but now his eases over to her and leans down. She will lick him as long as he will stand there.

LULU doesn't just like Tom, she loves all the cows. Any one who in the patch next to the yard has the oportunitiy to be "cleaned and loved by LULU".
LULU was orginally one of two bulldogs that belonged to my son. When he left home, he took the male dog and left me LULU. Sid and I have enjoyed her so much. I realize that some people are not dog lovers and do not understand why the rest of us are. Dogs seem to pull a family together somehow. We have always had a pet and most times several. I always think when we lose them I will not get another, but somehow we always do. I think it is because we cannot stand the void in our lives.
Sid and I take LULU for rides in our MULE (a gas powered vehicle) every evening and sometimes morning (depending on work being done). She loves to ride although she cannot jump in or out (she tries). She will ride as long as you will let her. Last evening we saw, once again, a Doe and twin fawns in our South pasture. She has been there for weeks. We commented that we know there are people who would pay big bucks to be able to see and experience the things we see everyday. It is so much work to live on a ranch. But I wouldn't trade it---not one minute of it.

After attending an embroidery workshop and learning a little more about stablizers and hooping, I came home inspired to try again!! The boots came out great, but never have had much trouble with designs with few stitches. Although you cannot tell, the watering can on the right puckered some. The violets below did not pucker. I used to sheets of heavy tearaway.
More western brown work will make it into a quilt. The watering can and violets will not as they have problems. I will continue to practise and hopefully find the time spent practising to be rewarding. Comments are welcome. Thanks in advance.

BIRTHDAY FABRIC

The Wacky Pac Quilting Bee Group decided to give 1/2 yard pieces of fabric for birthdays this year. Each member would choose the type of fabric she wanted to receive. I choose Black/Tan. We meet on the second Wednesday of each month. I did not get to attend on my birthday month (May), so Rhonda took my fabric home with her. She fondled it for several weeks and then I received this parcel in the mail.Below are the five 1/2 yard pieces that I found inside. Some of the most beautiful pieces of fabric I have ever seen! Don't you agree? I have spent the last few days trying to decide which Wacky gave me which piece. Starting with the Top fabric, I will list my guesses. I will take the fabrics with me to our next meeting, which is tonight, and we will see how well I know my friends. That is, if they can remember which one they bought!! LOL

Texas Dept. of Agriculture Block Challenge

My challenge block was mailed last week. I was required to use 6 of the fabrics included in the packet. This is my pattern, made AFTER the block. I decided to use a pieced background to make it easier to incorporate more of the fabrics into the block. I am not sure now that this was a good choice. The block is dark. Oh well, ---you never know how these contests will turn out.

The blocks chosen must be compatible so as to look good together in a quilt. After the blocks are all collected, the twenty chosen blocks will be sent to the person responsible for putting the quilt together. Winners will not be announced until they are sure that all the chosen blocks work well in the quilt and that all blocks are the right size, etc. We should learn the winners around the middle of July.

When I received my packet of information and fabrics, I was surprised to find out of my home state's status in the wine industry. I knew that wine was produced, but I did not realize that we rank 5th in the nation. I chose this as my theme.

Three other members of my quilting group also entered this challenge. Wouldn't it be great if we all have blocks chosen for the quilt? There is a group of ladies in Sulphur Springs that enter every year. Three of these ladie's blocks were chosen in 2006.

To read about individual blocks from 2006 and to see all the quilts from previous years look here
