Grandmother Dora's "Improved 9-Patch" Quilt

Just time for a quick post. This Improved 9 patch was made by my great grandmother, Dora Gilliam Lamberth. I believe it could be dated circa 1920. I love the wonderful classic fabrics. The backing is flour sack prints. All different --just sewd together as they were until the backing was large enough. My grandmother made many quilts in her lifetime and I am lucky to have one. I don't know very much about her, but if she was a quilter, I know she was a great person, and I know where some of my love for quilting came from. Wouldn't you just love to have a quilty conversation with the one's who passed their quilty genes on to you---

That is a great quilt. It is nice to have a quilt from a loved one - I have one my grandmother made for me - and one she made for my son. She was the one who got me to quilting.

What a treasure! My grandmother died when I was only 9 months old, but she too was a quilter. I do not have one of her quilts, but I do have a dresden plate block that she made and the other pieces that go with it to make 10 more blocks. It was a kit she bought in the 1940's and she made the first block right after I was born in 1950 and 9 months later she died.

This is my first go-around the blog ring, and I hope to make many new friends in blogland.

Molly, that is so awesome! What a lovely quilt. It would certainly be fun to sit with our earlier generations and share stories. You have so many family heirlooms. You are a very lucky person. Not many people are able to have all these quilts and things passed down thru the family. That is my goal to make sure that my stuff is passed down for future generations.

I sure would love to have a conversation with some of the preceeding quilters in our family!

What a wonderful keepsake. I have a tray cloth and a small table cloth which my grandmother embroidered for me.

Not sure where my quilty genes came from. But it would be fabulous to chat with some of these ladies and hear their stories.

If you would like to play, I have tagged you for the "wierd and random" meme. See my blog from today, 2/29.
